info

Tom and Jerry immortalized Rhapsody in Blue for piano and orchestra. It is Gershwin writing at his best, telling the snooty classical world – “Listen To What I’ve Got!”

The easiest way to tackle this song may be to count as well as clap the rhythm aloud to put it in your blood stream prior to doing anything else. While in most music you would usually put the most focus on the main beat of the measure, in jazz this is often not the case, as you often have to slap the second and even fourth beats a little more to create a more funky rhythm. A metronome should be very useful, yet we simply cannot state enough the value of counting aloud.

One can always tell a pianist by way of the way that they use their left hand, so perform the bass section by itself a couple of times. It’s better to practice slow avoiding the desire to speed up once you begin understanding a composition like this. Don’t ever be ashamed of telling yourself the beat out loud, as even the finest pianists have to do it to get a more effective experience pertaining to the beat. The sustain pedal can make the song appear much more pleasing – alter it just about every bar approximately to make the piano chords last a bit longer.

Listen to how the composer played Rhapsody in Blue himself on Youtube, which is much faster than most modern interpretations – almost comical. But it reveals his dislike for sentimentality.
